Pat Northrup: Making Maple Sugar Cakes

Back in the late eighteen hundreds, during spring, the people on Ojibwe reserves across Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota made  tons of maple sugar cakes.

Thousands of trees were used with almost everyone in the tribe pitching in tapping trees, cutting firewood, and boiling down in large cast iron kettles.

The Northrups and their extended family on the Fond Du Lac reserve in northeastern Minnesota follow this tradition.

Pat Northrup demonstrates how to turn maple syrup in maple sugar cakes. She keeps enough for personal use and shares the fruits of their harvest with elders in the community.
