by Nick Vander Puy
Reserve, Wisconsin (LCOTV)

During late March more than 140 women were honored at the Women of Influence pow wow on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reserve in northwestern Wisconsin.  A meal of deer meat, wild rice, corn, and berries was served to the community. Each woman received a small birch bark tray.

Theresa Barber leads the  First Breath stop smoking program through the Great Lakes Inter-tribal Council.  At the pow wow she talked about women often neglect their own health, how to quit smoking, and the role tobacco plays in traditional spirituality.

"Women often focus on other's health and don't care enough for themselves."
