Move started to preserve railroad depot

Aberdeen, South Dakota (AP) 10-07

A $5.7 million drive has begun to finish restoration of a historic railroad depot in downtown Aberdeen.

Officials say at least $900,000 is needed to get the air-handling systems operating in the building.

The fund drive is intended to preserve and maintain the depot.

About $1.8 million has been spent on preliminary work in the building, which houses the Native American Cultural Center and Museum, James Valley Model Railroad Association and the World War II Red Cross Canteen Exhibit.

Plans call for eventual establishment of a regional railroad museum, gift shop, office space, and an outdoor wall to honor American Indian chiefs.
