Mescalero Apache tribal leaders say now is the time to focus on renewable energy.

Tribal officials say they hope to cut down on energy consumption and develop economic opportunities based on the increasing demand for alternative energy.

Apache tribe vice president Sandra Platero tells the Alamogordo Daily News that renewable energy gives the tribe an opportunity to diversify business enterprises and honor traditional values.

Mescalero leadership says it hopes to build off of an initiative to retool the tribe’s sawmill for power generation.

The tribe says it is putting together a 10-year master plan for renewable energy.
