NRC officials heckled at raucous NY meeting

Cortlandt, New York (AP) June 2011

Officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission were heckled at a public meeting on New York's Indian Point nuclear plant.

The NRC officials said that the facility had operated safely in 2010. They said the plant was built to withstand attacks, and has regular security checks.

Audience members at the meeting in Cortlandt responded by shouting,  “Liars!” and “lap dogs!”

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, a Democrat from Suffern, was among those speaking in opposition to the plant. Some members of the business community spoke in favor of Indian Point.

The Journal News notes that the plant has received top marks from the NRC for seven consecutive years despite some leaks and problems with its emergency sirens.
