Oklahoma senator halts Indian settlement in Congress

Washington (AP) October 2010

Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn has held up approval of a bill that would pay off settlements with American Indians and black farmers.

The bill was thought likely to be approved in the Senate last week before Congress began a pre-election adjournment.

But Coburn held up the bill that would provide $3.4 billion to settle claims that the Interior Department mismanaged Indian trust funds. The bill also includes $1.2 billion to remedy discrimination claims against the Agriculture Department by black farmers.

An aide to Coburn says the senator is dissatisfied with the way the bill would be paid for.
