Arizonans dumps 3 tons of prescription drugs

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) October 2010

Arizonans opened their medicine cabinets and emptied them of over 3 tons of prescription drugs during the Operation Take-Back Arizona.

The one-day DEA nationwide campaign was held last week and provided Arizonans the ability to properly dispose of their unwanted and expired medications in a safe and environmentally sound way.

Over 33 police, tribal and sheriff departments throughout Arizona hosted 74 collection sites where residents came out in force to support the first statewide prescription drug “Take-Back” campaign.

The DEA says studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In Arizona, one in five teens has reported abusing prescription drugs.
