Kalispel and Spokane fight over off-reservation casino

Spokane, Washington (AP) September 2010

A fight between the Kalispel and Spokane tribes over the lucrative Spokane gambling market was the subject of a private meeting organized by the federal Office of Indian Gaming.

The Kalispel tribe operates the Northern Quest Casino near the Spokane airport, and the Spokanes have proposed to build a 2-million square foot casino complex nearby on land that is not part of their reservation. Because of that, the Spokanes need approval from the federal government.

The Kalispels had to get special approval to open Northern Quest in 2000 because their reservation is 50 miles from Spokane. The Spokane Tribe opposed that effort.
