Nottawaseppi celebrates casino anniversary with torch run

Battle Creek, Michigan (AP) August 2010

Members of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi plan a torch run to mark the one-year anniversary of their FireKeepers Casino near Battle Creek.

They carried a torch 22.3 miles from the casino to the Pine Creek Reservation in Calhoun County’s Athens Township.

The torch run was scheduled for August 1 and served as the kickoff event of a daylong tribal celebration, marking the anniversary of the opening of FireKeepers Casino on Aug. 5 of last year. The $300 million property is in Calhoun County’s Emmett Township.

Last year, tribal members carried a torch from the reservation to the casino.

The tribal relay team carried the torch in reverse. More than 50 members participated during the four-hour run.
