Parmelee breaks ground on new fire station

Residents of the Rosebud Indian Reservation town of Parmelee have broken ground on a new fire station.

The Rapid City Journal reports ( that the facility for the Parmelee Volunteer Fire Department is being paid for with a $120,000 grant and loan combination from South Dakota USDA Rural Development.

The state of South Dakota also contributed a $130,000 community development block grant, and community members raised money for the project.

The 50-foot-by-70-foot station will house the 20-member department, which serves a population of nearly 2,000.

The nearest fire department is 21 miles away.
