Native American site being excavated in Colchester

Volunteers from the Vermont Archaeological Society are helping study a Colchester site that is believed to have been used by Native Americans thousands of years ago.

University of Vermont Archaeologist Charles Knight says the original inhabitants chose the spot on the hills about Indian Brook near Severance Corners for the same reason people want to live in the area today.

And that’s why the site is being excavated this summer.

The site is being studied as part of Vermont’s Act 250 land use permit process, which requires an archaeological review be a site can be developed.

Knight says the evidence from the current study suggests a temporary hunting camp from the early woodlands period, about 2,000 years ago.
