Mercyhurst digger to search for early Americans

A Mercyhurst College archaeologist will help lead a two-week expedition to search for evidence of early American Indians off what is now Florida’s Gulf Coast.

James Adovasio is best known for his work unearthing ancient human campsites believed to be 16,000 years old at the Meadowcroft Rockshelter in Avella, Washington County.

From July 30 to Aug. 12, Adovasio and University of Texas researchers will study the seabed about 300 feet deep off Florida’s coast. They’ll use sound wave tools to map the Gulf’s floor then a small diving robot with cameras to search for signs of ancient life. Scuba divers might be used if more interesting items turn up in shallower water.

The group hopes to find enough evidence of ancient life to persuade others to fund a longer, more detailed expedition.
