Alyssa Avila: Walks On

Wyandotte, Oklahoma (AP) August 2010

Police say the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s office has classified the death of a 9-year-old Wyandotte Elementary School student as “undetermined.”

Wyandotte Nation Tribal Police Chief Ken Murphy said that independent examinations of Alyssa Avila found no overt signs of trauma.

Murphy says trauma would be expected with a fatal blow to the head or the spine, but the absence of trauma doesn’t eliminate the possibility of a head injury.

The 4th grader was playing with other children on equipment called the X-Wave at the school Aug. 19 when she fell off and collapsed after she tried to get back on it. She died at a Miami hospital.

Alyssa’s funeral was held Aug. 25 at the Wyandotte School Gym.
