White, Hartley Frank : United States Navy

MINNESOTA, Longville  – Funeral services for HARTLEY FRANK WHITE, 84, were held May 9 at the Veterans Memorial Building in Cass Lake, Minnesota. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Federal Dam, Minnesota. Hartley was born February 10, 1925 in Onigum, Minnesota. He passed away May 5, 2009, at the Cass Lake Indian Hospital.

Hartely enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served in the Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation and the American Theater. He received a World War II Victory Medal. After his service, he was instrumental in starting the Indian Neighborhood Club of Minneapolis which promoted sobriety. After his return to Cass Lake, he was also instrumental in the creation of the first Bug-o-nay-ge-shig School and was also a member of the school board for four years. In 1974, Hartley was elected Tribal Chairman and served until he retired in 1988. (DeBahJiMon, June 2009)
