Smartlowit, Mitzie: Former Gaming Commissioner

WASHINGTON, Wapato – Funeral services for MITZIE SMARTLOWIT, 75, were held August 6, 2009, at the Merritt Funeral Home in Wapato, Washington. Mitzie was born to Moody Charley and Lucy Pe-El in 1934 at Satus, Washington. She passed away August 4, 2009 at her home.

Mitzie was an enrolled Yakama tribal member and lived on her homelands her entire life. She retired as a gaming commissioner for the Yakama Nation; she worked tirelessly for fix years to lay the foundation for the Yakama Legends Casino. She also worked as a community health representative (CHR) and a as a teacher’s aide. Mitzie was flunet in her Native language and traditional teachings. She gathered and prepared the natural foods.
