Stillday, Tommy J., Great Lakes Spiritual Leader passes on

Word has been received at News From Indian Country confirming the passing of Great Lakes Spiritual leader Tommy J. Stillday Jr.(Ozaawabiitang = Yellow Water) of Ponemah,he died Tuesday, Oct. 14,2008 at PHS Indian Hostpital in Red Lake Minnesota.

A wake weill begin on Thursday evening Oct. 16 at the Ponemah Elementary School and continue until the service.

A second evening feast with visitation, singing and dancing will occur on Friday evening, Oct. 17, and full funeral services begin on Saturday morning at 9:00 am, October 18. Anna Gibbs officiating.Burial will be in the Family Burial Grounds at Ponema.

Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck is assisting the family with arrangements.

Stillday, was a leader of the Great Lakes Medicine Lodge and was known through-out the region and Ojibwe Country for his great sense of humor and dedication to the preservation of the Ojibwe language and customs.

Stillday was responsible of hundreds of ceremonies ranging from Anishinaabe naming ceremonies, marriage and funerals to everyday small offering prayers of thanksgiving.

He was often used as a Master of Ceremonies or main ceremonial speaker at regional powwows.
