Gouge, Richard: of Lac Courte Oreilles

Richard G. Gouge’, age 86 of LCO, passed away, September 1, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family.

Richard George was born February 9, 1922 in Reserve, WI, the son of George & Harriet (Isham) Gouge’. He grew up in Reserve and attended school at St. Francis and Kinnomon Schools. In September 1942 Richard enlisted in the US Army and served during WWII until January 1946. He served in Normandy, Northern France receiving Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European, African, and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbons, Good Conduct Medal, three Bronze Battle Stars and four Overseas Service Bars. Richard was united in marriage to Katherine Barrett on March 14, 1969. He was a foster parent for many years. There are many who called him “Dad”, and who he loved and called his own.

He is survived by his wife Katherine; sons Brandon “Tuffy” Gouge’, Chris Gouge’ David Gouge’ all of LCO, Louis Gouge’ of Fulton, KY, Maurice Garbow of Hibbing, MN, Eugene Butler & Donald Butler of LCO; daughters Elizabeth “Betty” (Thomas) Corbine-Gouge’ of LCO, Lizzette “Bubbles” Gouge’-Johnson of Bloomington, MN, Kimberly (Abel) Leecy-Matos, Sharon LaRush-Benson, Christian Andrade of LCO, Yvonne “Doosie” Barrett of St. Paul, MN & Nadine “Wussey” (Larry) Wade of Mille Lacs, MN; many grandchildren, great grandchildren & great great grandchildren; brothers Louis Gouge Sr., William (Geraldine) Gouge’ Sr. both of LCO; sisters Hazel (Zene) Anderson of Superior, Delores Gouge’ of LCO; sisters-in-law Euncie Gouge’ of Hayward & Judith Gouge’ of Superior; many nephews and nieces.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Richard George Gouge’ II & Gordon Lee Mason; two daughters Marilyn Joyce & Ruth Marie Gouge’; sisters Heloise Scharp & Elizabeth Schmock, brothers Art Butler, Allen Roy Gouge’, Elmer “Tiny” Gouge’, Joseph Gouge’ & Gerald Gouge’ Sr.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., September 5 at St. Francis Solanus Indian Mission in Reserve. Father Gregory Hopefl officiating with music provided by Sister Felissa Zander and Jerome Isham. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery with military honors provided by LCO AMVETS Post #1998.

Honorary casket bearers were Zene Anderson, Burt Burdick, Michael Davis, Louis Gouge’ Sr., William Gouge’ Sr., Jerry Havlon, Rick St. Germaine & Rudy Tudjen.

Casket bearers were Thomas Corbine, Maurice Garbow, Brandon Gouge’, Gary Gouge’, Gerald Gouge’ Jr., Louis Gouge’, Louis Gouge’ Jr. & William Gouge’ Jr.
