William H. Carufel Jr., “Shkwckwaan,” 84, of Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, passed on May 22, 2008, at his home

Carufel served his country during WWII in the Merchant Marines with a rank of Lt. J.G.

He belonged to many veterans organizations and honor guards. He was a retired member of the Chicago Pipefitters Local 597 and former member of the Calumet Park Police Department.

Bill was a proud member of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. He loved hunting, traveling the world, the Chicago Bears and Cubs.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Gertrude (nee Soulier); children, Mary (John) Rociola, Candace (Carl) Laff, William (Sandrea) Carufel; twenty one grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; brother George Carufel and a sister Delores (William) Kukkahn; a son-in-law Peter Hanton, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Rose, four brothers and five sisters and sister-in-law Coralee.

Funeral services were held on May 27 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in La du Flambeau with burial at the Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be directed to you local Alzheimer’s Association.
