Two more names were added to a Reno memorial recognizing officers who have died in the line of duty.

The names of Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Kara Kelly-Borgognone and Fallon Paiute-Shoshone tribal police officer Adam Menuez were added May 9 to the James D. Hoff Peace Officers Memorial.

Both died in traffic accidents while responding to calls over the last year.

Kelly-Borgognone was the first female law officer in Nevada killed in the line of duty. Menuez was the first tribal officer killed.

“It’s one day a year where every officer gets the opportunity to stand up for each other and pay respects and do reflection on the officers who did the job before us,” Deputy Reno Police Chief Jim Johns said.

Hundreds of people paid tribute as the names of the two officers were etched into the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Carson City.

President John F. Kennedy made May 15 National Peace Officers Day in 1962.
