Tribal members say Louella Benson Young Bear, who recently passed away, was one of the few people who spoke the Mandan language fluently.

Funeral services are being made for the 86-year-old Young Bear, of Mandaree. She was one of the elders of the Three Affiliated Tribes.

Her brother, Edwin Benson, has taught the Mandan language at the Twin Buttes school for 16 years.

Cynthia Danks of Twin Buttes, one of the pallbearers for Young Bear’s funeral, said Young Bear always hoped her birth language would not disappear.

Young Bear’s funeral is in the Water Chief Hall in Mandaree.
