The vice chairman of the Three Affiliated Tribes has passed away of natural causes.

Nathan Hale, 58, of Mandaree, passed away March 17 at a Watford City hospital. He had been suffering from cancer and heart problems, tribal spokeswoman Mary Schoppert said.

“Vice chairman Hale was a wise and gifted leader, whose insight and direction gave each of us new perspectives on the issues confronting the tribes today,” Tribal Chairman Marcus Wells Jr. said.

Hale focused on health issues as vice chairman and had oversight of the new health center being built in New Town.

A memorial service was held March 19 in the tribe’s administration building, Schoppert said. Hale’s funeral was held on March 20 in the Mandaree school.
