Sturgis, Ralph: Lifetime chief of Mohegan laid to rest

Hundreds of people gathered in Uncasville to remember and honor longtime Mohegan Tribe Chief Ralph Sturges.

A memorial service and burial was held at the Mohegan Burial Ground.

Sturges died from lung cancer October 1st at the age of 88. He was elected chief for life in 1992 and oversaw the tribe’s federal recognition and development of the Mohegan Sun casino.

Sturges was also a sculptor whose works can be found at the state Capitol, New London City Hall and Montville High School.

The service October 5th drew family, friends, tribal members in full regalia from a number of American Indian groups.

A procession of about 600 to 700 people walked from the church to the Mohegan burial grounds along the Thames River at Fort Shantok.
