Cantu re-elected Saginaw Chippewa tribal chief

Fred Cantu has become the first Saginaw Chippewa tribal chief in 18 years to be elected to a second consecutive term.

He won the election during early December.

Cantu is quick to deflect credit for several major initiatives marking his first term.

He says opening a casino in Arenac County, building a senior center and buying a marina on Saginaw Bay were started under previous administrations.

Cantu tells the Morning Sun the once-rough-and-tumble politics of the tribe appear to have calmed over the past couple of years. He says he’s learned that members can put their differences aside and move in a positive direction.
