Apparent jail suicide victim may have Montana ties

Nespelem, Washington (AP) 12-01

A man with possible ties to Montana has been found dead in a jail cell on the Colville Reservation in Washington state. Tribal police say he apparently committed suicide.

Police Commander Mike Kessler says guards found 34-year-old Denver L. Buckman of Keller hanging in his cell early on the morning of Nov. 20. He was pronounced dead soon afterward.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs and FBI are investigating, but an initial police investigation found that Buckman was alone in the cell and probably committed suicide.

Kessler says he doesn’t know whether Buckman was serving a sentence, awaiting trial or being held for investigation. He believes Buckman was a member of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe on the Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana.
